Tan Dinh Church (Official name: Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is situated at 289 Hai Ba Trung street, Ward 8, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The church was started building during the French colonial period in 1870 and completed in 1876 when Vietnam was part of French Indochina. The church was built according to Roman architectural style. It is the second large church in Ho Chi Minh City, after the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, and it is the only church in Ho Chi Minh City whose outside is painted pink.
Tan Dinh parish was formed in 1861, was one of the first parishes in Vietnam. The first priest of Tan Dinh church is Thesdore Louis Joseph Wibaox. In the beginning, the parishioners only built a wooden church to have the place to pray. Christians are more and more crowded, requiring a more spacious place to carry out ceremonies. In 1870, Joseph Luu Chau Du, the vicar at that time decided to build a big church. The work was conducted and completed on December 16, 1876. This work has always been repaired in many different stages but never erased the original architecture.
Tan Dinh Church has a length of 48 m, a width of 22 m, a height of 42 m. Especially, the bell tower has a height of 52,62 m. The church is designed according to Gothic style combining Roman style, mixing of Baroque style. The pink color of the whole the church makes it stand out against the blue sky, creating a splendid and refreshing look.
From the facade looking at, visitors can see one bell tower and eight small lantern towers on 2 sides. The top of the bell tower is pyramid shaped with a 3-meter-high copper cross. In the center of the second floor of the bell tower, there is a big clock. The doors and windows have gentle arc-shaped tops. The lantern towers have many ventilation holes and the patterns creating a charming look. In the bell tower, there are 5 bells, 5.5 tons in total. Two sides of the church have 2 towers which their tops are round like onions.
The inside of the church looks strong with two Gothic column rows leading to the main altars. Along with the bell tower, these two rows of columns are put the crosses that are thought to be the most beautiful in the whole structure. The row of leftmost columns has statues of the female saints, The row of rightmost columns has statues of the male saints. The altars in the Saint palace are made of precious stones brought back from Italy. The statue of Jesus Christ is put on the center altar, and the statues of saints are put two sides. The air in the church is very cool because of its height and width.
The outside part of the church is rather large. To the left of the church has a small house having a leaf shape very beautiful. To the left of the hose, there is a board attach small photos of dead people. To the right of the church, there is a souvenir shop, parking space, especially a square in which there is a Jesus Christ statue with two arms spreading.
Tan Dinh Church has had many Christain generations coming to rely on. Every ceremony hour Christians attend crowdedly. This has been also the place that attracts lots of domestic and foreign tourists. Every day hundreds of tourists come here to admire the unique architecture of the church and take beautiful photos for a souvenir. Every hour people around get to the bell sound coming from the church. The bell sound is like a call to people’s minds that are roaming return to themselves.
