Tan Dinh Church, Ho Chi Minh City


Tan Dinh church (Vietnamese: Nhà thờ Tân Định, official name: Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is situated at 289 Hai Ba Trung street, Ward 8, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The church was started building during the French colonial period in 1870 and completed in 1876 when Vietnam was part of French Indochina. The church was built according to Roman architectural style. It is the second large church in Ho Chi Minh City, after the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, and it is the only church in Ho Chi Minh City whose outside is painted pink.


Tan Dinh parish was formed in 1861, was one of the first parishes in Vietnam. The first priest of Tan Dinh church is Thesdore Louis Joseph Wibaox. In the beginning, the parishioners only built a wooden church to have the place to pray. Christians are more and more crowded, requiring a more spacious place to carry out ceremonies. In 1870, Joseph Luu Chau Du,  the vicar at that time decided to build a big church. The work was conducted and completed on December 16, 1876. This work has always been repaired in many different stages but never erased the original architecture.


Tan Dinh Church has a length of 48 m, a width of 22 m, a height of 42 m. Separately, the bell tower has a height of 52,62 m. The overall architecture is of Gothic style combining Roman style, mixing of Baroque style in decorative strokes. The pink color of the whole the church makes it stand out against the blue sky, creating a splendid and refreshing look.

From the facade looking at, visitors can see the main tower and two auxiliary towers. The top of the tower is an octagonal pyramid with a 3-meter-high copper cross. There are 5 bells in the tower, 5.5 tons in total. Two auxiliary towers have lamp towers and many ventilation holes and the patterns create a strong, charming look. Two rows of corridors have the dome, covered with fish scale tiles.  The doorways are Circles decorated leaves flowers, angel statues very delicately.

The inside of the church looks strong with two Gothic column rows leading to the main altars. Along with the facade, these two rows of columns are put the crosses that are thought to be the most beautiful in the whole structure. The row of leftmost columns has statues of the female saints, The row of rightmost columns has statues of the male saints. The altars in the Saint palace are made of precious stones brought back from Italy. The statue of Jesus Christ is put on the center altar, and the statues of saints are put two sides. The air in the church is very cool because of its height and width. Because Tan Dinh Church has a historical length, a beautiful architecture, is a place that Christians of many generations coming to rely on, Tan Dinh Church is listed historical, cultural, traveling addresses of Ho Chi Minh City.
