Van Phat Pagoda (Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda) is located at 66/14 Nghia Thuc Street, Ward 5, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City. The pagoda is built in the middle of the 20th century This is Chinese Pagoda and of Mahayana Buddhism. The pagoda has the most statues in Vietnam, which attract lots of domestic and foreign visitors.
In 1959, Van Phat Pagoda was built by Buddhist Monk Thich Dieu Hoa and Buddhist Monk Tang Duc Bon (From Fujian, China). It was the place to Chinese Buddhist in Saigon and nearby provinces to come to pray. From 1998 to 2008, the pagoda was restored by Buddhist Monk Thich Truyen Cuong (from Guangdong, China).
The Van Phat Pagoda campus has an area of 600 m2. The pagoda has 4 floors and 1 terrace. This is the pagoda having the most Buddha statues in Vietnam. The first-floor has Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva (Vietnamese: Địa Tạng Vương Bồ Tát) statue. The second floor has (Vietnamese: Quan Thế Âm Bồ Tát) statue; on the walls, there are small pieces of wood written the names of dead people on them. The third floor has Shakyamuni Buddha (Vietnamese: Thích Ca Mâu Ni) statue; two sides have 2 high lotus towers, each tower has thousands of small Buddha pictures; on the walls, there are some Arhat (Vietnamese: A-la-hán) statues. The fourth floor has a Vairocana Buddha (Vietnamese: Tỳ-lô-giá-na) statue; on the right of Vairocana, there is a Samanta Bhadra Boddhisattva (Vietnamese: Phổ Hiền) statue; on the left, there is a Manjushri Boddhisattva(Văn Thù Sư Lợi Bồ Tát) statue; on the walls, there are so many small Buddha statues. The terrace has a big tower containing the body of the first abbot of the pagoda; opposite the tower is the wall, on which there is a nine-dragon relief.
The worship way of Van Phat Pagoda clearly shows the philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism (Vietnamese: Phật giáo đại thừa). Mahayana Buddhism believes that there are so many Buddhas, Boddhisattvas and Arhats in the universe (while Hinayana Buddhism (Vietnamese: Phật giáo tiểu thừa) only believes that there is only one historical Buddha, Who is Shakyamuni Buddha and there are many Arhat, who are liberated from reincarnation.).
Van Phat Pagoda is a Chinese pagoda and of Mahayana Buddism. Every day Chinese Vietnamese Buddhists in the area come here to carry out the ceremony. They recite the Buddhist scriptures in Chinese. The majority of Vietnamese follow Buddhism, so they also often come here to pray. Because the pagoda has a unique worship way, lots of domestic and foreign tourists come to visit. The pagoda has an elevator, which is very convenient for the elderly and the disabled.
